Office Envy: Studiomates Offices

A while ago I showed you the beautiful office space of New York based firm Sagmeister & Walsh. Today my office envy is directed at Studiomates Offices, also located in New York (in the Dumbo district to be more precise: DownUnder the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). It's a place where creatives - ranging from designers, writers and architects to documentary filmmakers - do their business :) I love the Eames furniture, the quirky details like the artwork, the accordeon stools, the bike on the wall and the dog ;) I'd sure get some work done here! I can feel the creative juices flowing all the way here in front of my computer, can't you? :)

Inspiring Office: Sagmeister & Walsh

As you may have noticed by now I don't like too much colour in my ideal home. But in some places it works out so perfectly as an accent that I'll gladly make an exception ;) Take a look at this beautiful office of New York based firm Sagmeister & Walsh. I wouldn't mind trading this for my own tiny office space ;) Love the Eames chairs (DAW and DSW) and the Wegner Shell Chair. And ofcourse the Design House Stockholm ladder :)

Room Inspiration: Home Offices

Today I'll show you some lovely home offices. I don't like too many distractions in my office space. I really like 'clean' creative spaces with a lot of black and white - for some added contrast. Some colourful accents or wooden details will make it feel a little less clinical. Click the photos to get to their original source :)

I really love this photo by Dutch blogger Beeldsteil. The graphic black and white makes this office very 'clean', great when you have to focus :) Love the String System desk! Make sure to visit her website and instagram account!

I really, really love black walls and the contrasts in this photo by Melanie Jansman are great! I like everything in this photo: the Eames Dsw chair, the simple table with stylish legs, the Love Type laptop sleeve, the wall rack.. :) Make sure to visit Melanie's instagram account!

As usual, I love everything in the home of Nordic Leaves :) Lovely details as well: the Arne Jacobsen Chair and Desk Lamp, A String System Desk, the Stendig Calendar and the Kristian Vedel Bird :)

This photo is by blogger Pihkala and here we see the beautiful black and white contrast. I like the concrete plant - pot as a rough detail - and the HAY Hand and Memo Pad very much as well!

Oh Ale Besso, how I love your home :) This beautiful HAY About a Chair AAC22 is one of my favourite chairs as well (I own one myself) and it's the perfect eye catcher in this very clean home office.

A Merry Mishap's home office also has this black and white contrast but I love how she only painted half her wall to keep it light overall. Although the contrast between the desk against the black wall could have been very lovely as well! The smudged chalk on the chalkboard give it the appearance that this office is actually used for working :)

Nina Holst from Stylizimo recently decided to paint her office light blue, but I still prefer the black and white thing that she used to have in her creative space. Especially with a light wooden accent, like this Muuto Wood Lamp. The copper hangers, the Hay boxes and the Design Letters Mug finish up this great working space :)

It's a shame that the Vitra Uten.Silo is so expensive, because I would really love to have one :) This home office by Hitta Hem could - perhaps - use a little colour or some wooden accent, but I love how 'clean' it looks.

Weekend Inspiration: Nordic Homes

Here is some Nordic Home weekend inspiration. Love the black Thonet Chair in the first photo by Ollie and Sebs Haus, the Eames Lounge Chair Wood chairs in the fifth photo and the abundance of HAY products in the fourth photo :) I'm really inspired by the Dutch home in the third photo and I like the Montis side table very much (reminds me of the HAY Don't Leave Me Table though!).

Nordic Homes

This blog is dedicated to Midcentury Modern and contemporary Nordic Design. So naturally I love it when I discover beautiful homes that combine these two styles :) Below you will see how chairs by designers like Arne Jacobsen, Charles & Ray Eames and Hans Wegner -- who designed their pieces halfway through the last century -- blend in so naturally with modern items. Like the Playtype poster in picture one and the modern style bare lightbulb in photo three. The fourth photo (by lovely interior blogger Lisbet E) combines IKEA effortlessly with the same Arne Jacobsen Ant Chair. The beautiful Eames Lounge Chair Wood is featured in the last photo, combined with very modern window shutters. I could live in these homes :)

I hope you all have a great weekend! I won't be posting for a while since I have my university thesis due next week and two hours after handing it in I will be in a plane to Copenhagen. When I get back I'll let you in on the highlights of our trip. With any luck I'll get my own Playtype poster while I'm there. My parents love it when my boyfriend and I undertake trips so they can borrow our apartment and visit lovely Utrecht ;)

8 Decorating Tips for Small Apartments

As mentioned in one of my previous posts I live in a tiny apartment. Luckily I don't need a lot of space, but it requires some inventive decorating. My (first world) problem is that I love things like black walls -- which makes a room appear smaller. But don't let that stop you if that's what you want of course :)

#1 White, White, White!

If you have a small home, you need as much light in your home as you can possibly get! The best way to obtain light is by painting your walls white and using light furniture.

#2 Get a high sleeper

If you only have one room in your home you'll need to sleep in your living room. You could get a sofa bed but my own experience is that these are rarely pretty and get weird bumps and holes within no time ;) I know your first association with high sleepers might be the bunk bed from your youth that you shared with your little sister -- or perhaps the high sleeper during your college years, but today you can find several beautiful minimalistic loft beds that will increase your living room space and look great at the same time!

#3 Multifunctional furniture

Make sure items in your home have more functions. You could opt for a sofa bed (if you're sure.. ;) or get an ottoman with hidden storage space within. I own a fold-out table which comes in very handy when entertaining guests. There's some incredible multifunctional furniture for sale online, like murphy beds that transform into home offices during the day, but these are very, VERY, expensive :(

#4 Closed cabinets

Open cabinets are a great way to display your books and other little treasures. Unfortunately, they also look crowded -- especially if your books aren't all-white ;) Closed cabinets, preferably white (or even better: with mirror doors!) make your apartment appear larger! Added bonus: If you live in a small apartment then you know that your home is messy about five minutes after you cleaned up -> behind closed doors your piled up mail is invisible :) Buying cabinets on legs is even better!

#5 Mirrors

I probably don't have to tell you that a large mirror does wonders in creating a seemingly large space :)

#6 Room dividers

If you live in a studio apartment and you only have 1 room, you can create the illusion of having several rooms by placing room dividers. It will negate some of the openness of one large room, but it will give you some more privacy and it makes your home more cosy :) You could also get a curtain, but a cupboard also offers extra storage, something you're always in need of when you live compact ;)

#7 Scaled-down furniture

Of course I'd kill to get the beautiful but large HAY Mags Sofa. But think of the right proportions for your home: you don't want your small living room to be 50% sofa ;) Make sure your furniture is the right size for your apartment. Think about that when buying pieces like a coffee table as well. I own a very narrow office desk (the Farringdon Laptop Desk) that folds out. It doesn't take up a lot of space, yet I still have all the desk space I need :)

#8 Use your space!

This last tip might be very obvious, but use the space you have! That includes the space underneath your bed and stairs, that small area between your washing machine/refrigerator and the wall etcetera!
